A conversational description! Edgar Littlefield created this pot presumably while developing his vitreous high fired pottery while at the newly established art division in ceramics at Ohio State University. Imagine the creative environment that must have existed while Edgar Littlefield worked alongside Arthur Baggs and others while developing the vitrified red clay body that this vase is comprised of. Ceramics Engineering, Chemistry & Art meet to produce technically and aesthetically advanced pottery such as this pot. The vase is simply signed E L in fanciful script along with the date of 1940. Perfect condition and measuring 9 1/4” tall. While similar one-off works reside in many museums, the market is such that values seem disproportionately low considering the rarity, aesthetics, and technical achievements of such a vases. I adhere to the market realities, but with a sense of confusion as these vases by Baggs & Littlefield are not common. Are they too rare and therefore less understood? Is this a case of, “well, there is not one in so & so’s collection”? Yet, prized and displayed in museums. I cease my ramblings and invite comments, conversation, and interest in this exceptional pot.
